Walpole Community Garden located at the Hooper Institute
The Walpole Community Garden started in 2009 as an outreach
of the Walpole Energy Committee. Our location at the Hooper
Institute had been used many years ago for the same purpose.
Preparing the soil for vegetable crops required heavy equipment
that first spring. We ploughed, rototilled and strung fence with the
help of high school students and our plot holders. Fletcher, Abnaki
and Brookfield Farms have generously donated time and materials
toward our continuing success. The spirit of working together
within the community spurred us on. Today we have 27 plot
holders ranging in age from ages 4 to 76.
Fresh local produce, flowers, "how-to" workshops and an annual harvest dinner are shared with the
community. In the interest of building healthy soil, we have chosen to adopt "No-till" gardening
practices. We strive to be a "Zero-Waste" garden, learning from each plant and animal species
with whom we share this precious environment.
